Difference between PTN packet switch and traditional ring switch
PTN (packet transport Network) refers to such an optical transmission network architecture and specific technology: a layer is set between the IP service and the underlying optical transmission medium, which is designed for the burst of packet traffic and the requirements of statistical multiplexing transmission. It takes the packet service as the core and supports multi service provision, with lower total cost of use (TCO), while taking the traditional advantages of optical transmission, including high Availability and reliability, efficient bandwidth management mechanism and traffic engineering, convenient OAM and network management, scalability, high security, etc.
PTN is based on the end-to-end, two-way point-to-point connection, and provides the ability of central management and protection switching within 50ms (after protection switching, it is the traditional ring network).
PTN's function is much stronger than Ethernet switch. First of all, OAM is stronger than switch. For example, switch can't perform loopback test. PTN can test whether the channel is normal with LB through maintenance alliance.
The common switch focuses on the processing ability of the common Ethernet frame, and the interface is mostly the electric port, so the transmission distance is short. While PTN focuses on MPLS, OAM, QoS and other aspects. Most of the interfaces are optical ports, and they are mostly used for long-distance transmission of the carrier network.
Therefore, PTN ring network switch is mostly used in long-distance transmission network such as highway, base station, etc.
